Shutdown This Weekend Not Out Of The Question

The current continuing resolution expires at midnight Friday and, if it’s not extended, there will be a government shutdown.

The current plan appears to be to extend the CR until the middle of December and, unlike previous CR battles, this one has been devoid of all threats and demands for additional spending cuts. But..although it is unlikely, it is not inconceivable that there will be a last-minute attempt by House Republicans to use the CR as leverage with House Democrats or the White House on something.

As a result, a shutdown at least over this weekend cannot be dismissed out of hand.

Hint: Watch the Sunday talk shows scramble for guests and quickly change their focus if this happens.

A government shutdown is a really bad idea...

.... For the Federal government. Frankly, I don't think the rest of the country really "noticed" or fely any "loss" when the Federal government was shut down for moer than a week with the major snowstorm a few years back. People are I think generally aware of the hyperpartisanship in Washington, and that not much is getting done, as the rest of the country struggles with the worst period since the Great Depression. With unemployemnt stuck above 9%, even the Fed saying its going to be bad until at least 2014, and the majority of people thinking things will be worse for their kids then for themselves, and that the nation is in decline.... I think if elections were held this month, we'd see some dramatic changes. FYI, including benefits, which are typically "rich" for government workers by private workers standards, the avergae compensation of government workers is substantially higher than for private sector workers [this per the Bureau of Labor Statistics]. Who are the servants here? So, I really don't think a "shutdown" for which Federal government workers will probably be paid anyway [at least that's my understanding is a brilliant idea....

Blah, blah, blah, GUBMINT WORKERS TUK MAH JAHB

Really, repeating the "overpaid government workers" zombie lie again? I'd post a link to some of the debunkings, but anyone who's still repeating it at this point is either a fool or a mindless Fox News zombie, so what's the point?

Stan - It was great meeting

Stan - It was great meeting you at Brookings this week. Loved your presentation! Regarding a potential shutdown, I wouldn't put it past the House either. Grandstanding = Governing ... tsk.

The Good Old Gridlock

One might reach the conclusion that the govt is now on an autopilot that might work in a state of gridlock.

Do nothing, and we get President Bush's tax policy starting in 2013 along with last summer's budget cuts.

GOP will probably squeal more than Dems about that outcome, but they would need to actually come to the table to negotiate if they don't want it. Tea party has probably learned that just whining all the time and being the obvious source of obstruction only gets you so far. Obstruction right now could buy them a Herbert Hoover label that will last 100 years, given the teetering state of Europe, and who would want to obstruct Black Friday anyhow?

Time to move along, folks, there's nothing to see here.
