I retired from playing softball this week.

 

That may not seem like a monumental event to everyone, but for me it is right up there with most of the other milestones of my life.

 

It was simply time to move on. Yes, I was the starting pitcher. And yes, I had the best year of my career with the fewest walks I've ever issued. But the next oldest person on the team was easily young enough to be my daughter, i wore a hat to cover my bald head, and I had to stretch for an hour after each game.

 

Like Roger Clemens, I'm open to offers for next season. But unless someone steps up Steinbrenner-like with serious cash, I'm not likely to be back.

 

I'm expecting a big ceremony before the first game next season to retire my number.

What are the other milestones in your life that affected you this way; I'm curious.

 I think a reason why this

 I think a reason why this posting is so poignant is because anyone who has ever played a recreational team sport reaches this point sooner or later.  So although it's personal to you I'll never forget the day I hung up my soccer cleats.  And then there are those who finally give up basketball after one knee injury too many.  These moments really do mark time for many of us.
