The Award For Worst Federal Agency Of All Time Goes To...

Al Kamen's "In The Loop" column in yesterday's Washington Post talks about the fake press conference held by FEMA had excruciatingly hard-to-read details about how the agency literally fabricated the whole thing, from reporters to questions.

Kamen's excellent story has now been followed up with lots of additional reporting and blogging. In particular, take a look at this from ABC News and this from Michelle Malkin.

FEMA was a laughing stock before this happened. But this is so bad that it's hard to imagine how Saturday Night Live or The Daily Show could even write material that would be better than the original.

This was actually the plot for Capiricon One, one of the worst movies of the 1970s, where NASA faked a Mars landing because it realized that it wouldn't actually be able to do it. Other than the locale, the biggest difference between the Hollywood hoax from almost 30 years ago and the real one from last week is that it took months for the truth to come out in the movie. In other words, FEMA couldn't even get the coverup right.

In a sure sign that the apocalyse may be approaching, one of the stars of Capricorn One was Sam Waterston, who this season is replacing Fred Thompson as the DA is Law and Order. One of the other stars was OJ Simpson.

And if that isn't enough to convince you that something very strange is happening, friends of my Beautiful and Talented Wife (The BTW), who is a professional actor, tell me that there has been talk about a doing a remake of Capricorn One.  Maybe it will be rewritten to be about a federal agency involved in natural disasters.
